Chapter 3: Vijayanagara Empire, Nayankara System & Deccan Sultanates

1. Foundation & Dynastic Succession

Founded in 1336 CE on the banks of the Tungabhadra River by brothers Harihara I and Bukka I under the spiritual guidance of Sage Vidyaranya, the Vijayanagara Empire served as a southern imperial bastion for over two centuries across four successive dynasties:

2. Krishnadevaraya (1509–1529 CE) & Imperial Statecraft

The reign of Emperor Krishnadevaraya marked the golden era of Vijayanagara:

  • Military Triumphs: Subjugated the Gajapatis of Odisha (capture of Udayagiri and Kondavidu), conquered the Raichur Doab (1520), and captured Gulbarga.
  • Literary Masterpiece (Amuktamalyada): Authored a Telugu political treatise propounding royal statecraft: "A king should rule with his eyes on the welfare of his subjects and patronize trade, especially the import of Arabian warhorses."
  • Ashtadiggajas (Eight Great Telugu Poets): Patronized Allasani Peddana (author of Manucharitra) and Tenali Ramakrishna.
  • Architectural Monuments: Constructed the Hazara Rama Temple, Vitthala Temple (Stone Chariot & Musical Pillars), and the grand eastern Gopuram at Virupaksha Temple.

3. Socio-Administrative Institutions

The Nayankara Military-Feudal System

  • Amara-Nayakas: Military commanders granted territorial estates (Amuram) by the Raya.
  • Obligations: Maintained fixed quotas of infantry, cavalry, and war elephants for the sovereign; collected revenue and remitted an annual tribute to the royal treasury; attended court festivals (e.g., Mahanavami Dibba).

The Ayagar Village Administration

Village affairs were governed by a hereditary council of twelve functionaries (Ayagars) (headman Gauḍa, accountant Senabhova, blacksmith, etc.) supported by tax-free land assignments (Manya).

4. The Battle of Talikota (Rakshasi-Tangadi, 1565 CE)

In January 1565, a grand coalition of four Deccan Sultanates (Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmadnagar, Bidar) crushed the Vijayanagara forces commanded by Regent Aliya Rama Raya. Vijayanagara city was systematically pillaged, marking the terminal decline of imperial hegemony in the south.
